Hutto, TX Homeowners Planning a New Roof

Hutto began in 1876, when the International-Great Northern railroad bought five acres from a local rancher, James Emory Hutto, for a station. The city sits on US 79 about seven or eight miles east-northeast of downtown Round Rock. The Census counted 27,577 residents in 2020 and about 46,048 by mid-2025, a climb of roughly 67 percent.

With so few old houses in town, the usual question is whether a first roof has run its course or took a storm hit early. We're a free referral service, not a roofing company: your request goes to one independent local roofer, who inspects and prices the job.

Hutto, TX Homes and Their Roofs

Hutto leads our map in home ownership. Census figures show 79.6 percent of homes owner-occupied, households averaging 3.01 people and only 6.7 percent of residents aged 65 or older, the youngest mix we cover. The median owner home value is $365,700, and the median household income is $118,834.

The Handbook of Texas counted about 1,250 people here in 2000, so most houses are 2000s to 2020s builds. Many of the earliest subdivisions are nearing the age when asphalt shingles may need a first replacement, especially on slopes facing south or west.

Roof Services in Hutto, TX

  • The builder's original roof. A roofer can tell you whether yours has good years left or is ready to come off.
  • Storm and hail damage. A roofer can document the damage and price the fix; any claim stays between you and your insurer.
  • Metal roofing. Panels handle heat and strong sun well. Ask your HOA before changing materials.
  • Shingle roofs. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are a choice, not a rule, and your insurer sets its own discount for them.
  • Repairs on younger roofs. A few lifted shingles or one small leak may only need a repair.

Each option has its own page: replacing the whole roof, hail and wind damage, metal options, shingle choices and smaller repairs.

Storms Across Eastern Williamson County

On March 21, 2022, the National Weather Service followed the Round Rock/Granger tornado for about 29 miles. It reached EF2 strength in Round Rock's Windy Terrace and Greenlawn Place neighborhoods, tearing roofs off several homes, and its path later crossed US 79 in eastern Williamson County on the way into Bell County.

FEMA's February 2021 winter storm declaration, DR-4586, included Williamson County, and the 2023 ice storm brought DR-4705 to the county as well. Ice-heavy limbs can crack shingles. Hail comes mostly in April and May, though the NWS write-up titled "The September 24, 2023 Round Rock / North Austin Hail Storm" shows fall storms happen too.

Permits and Registration in Hutto, TX

Round Rock's approach doesn't carry over to Hutto. The City of Hutto's Building Inspections Division answers questions at 512-759-5973, and contractors must complete the City's registration before they can apply for permits. You can ask any roofer whether that step is done.

City pages didn't confirm whether a straight re-roof needs a permit, so ask the City before work begins and put in writing who pulls one if it does. Beyond city limits, our search turned up no county permit for re-roofing a house, which makes HOA approval the step to plan around.

What a New Roof Costs in Hutto, TX

Nobody publishes Hutto-only roofing prices, so these rows lean on Austin-area and statewide numbers.

Roof area drives the total, and a roomy family house simply has more of it. Steep pitches and metal raise the number, and rotten decking only shows up once the old shingles are off. Ask the City whether any permit cost applies.

Why Hutto, TX Homeowners Start Here

Hutto doesn't take itself too seriously. In the City's telling of the legend, a hippo escaped a circus train at the depot in 1915, prompting the telegram "Stop trains! Hippo loose in Hutto." The City now counts between 5,000 and 10,000 concrete hippos around town.

Behind the fun sits a cotton town that ran five gins by 1884 and incorporated in 1940. Busy young households here get one request, one independent roofer and no bidding war. You pay nothing for the match, though the roofer may pay us.

Hutto, TX Questions, Answered

Does Hutto require a permit to replace a roof?

Hutto's City pages left the re-roof question open for us, so call the Building Inspections Division at 512-759-5973 before work starts. We did confirm that contractors register with the City before applying for any permit. If one is needed, the contract should say who pulls it.

Did the 2022 tornado hit Hutto?

The National Weather Service says the Round Rock/Granger tornado crossed US 79 in eastern Williamson County, but our sources don't name damage in Hutto itself. The roofs it tore off were in Round Rock neighborhoods. After any strong storm, an inspection shows where your roof stands.

My house was built after 2010. Could it already need a new roof?

Possibly, though age is only one clue. Hail, high wind and hard summer sun can wear a roof faster than the calendar suggests, especially on west-facing slopes. A roofer may just as easily find that a repair solves the problem.

Can a roofer cover my deductible, or my HOA block Class 4 shingles?

Neither. Texas law makes the deductible yours to pay, and a roofer offering to waive or absorb it is breaking the law. As for the HOA, state law won't let it forbid storm-resistant shingles, provided they look like the roofs around yours.
