An Area Built on Drive Times

Round Rock sits on I-35 about sixteen miles north of downtown Austin and reaches into two counties, Williamson and Travis. The towns listed here are short drives from the city: Georgetown to the north, Hutto to the east-northeast, Pflugerville to the south-southeast, and Brushy Creek and Cedar Park to the west.

Being close together doesn't make the rules match. Each city's building office sets its own re-roof requirements, and homes outside any city limits answer to a different set of sign-offs altogether.

Your Town, Listed

  • Round Rock, TX. The City says a residential re-roof doesn't need a permit, though changing the roof's framing calls for a remodel permit. Drip edge is required, and historic overlay homes need a Certificate of Appropriateness first. Building Inspection Division: 512-218-5550.
  • Georgetown, TX. About nine miles north, the Williamson County seat flips Round Rock's rule: a new roof inside city limits needs a permit, and roofing contractors register with the City at no cost. Building Inspections: 512-930-2550. Read the Georgetown, TX page.
  • Pflugerville, TX. About six miles south-southeast, in Travis County. We couldn't confirm the City's re-roof rule, so ask its Building Inspections & Permits office before work starts. Read the Pflugerville, TX page.
  • Hutto, TX. About seven to eight miles east-northeast. Contractors complete the City's registration before applying for permits; the re-roof rule wasn't confirmed, so ask the Building Inspections Division at 512-759-5973. Read the Hutto, TX page.
  • Cedar Park, TX. About eight miles west. Every contractor, existing or new, registers with the City at no fee. Its re-roof rule wasn't confirmed: ask Building Permits & Inspections at 512-401-5100. Read the Cedar Park, TX page.
  • Brushy Creek, TX. About four miles west and unincorporated, so there's no city permit desk. The MUD issues some residential permits but covers stormwater, water and wastewater; call 512-255-7871 ext. 410 if unsure. Read the Brushy Creek, TX page.

Outside city limits elsewhere in Williamson County, the County hasn't adopted a residential building code, and we found no county permit for a home re-roof. There, HOA approval is usually the sign-off to plan around, and your roofer should check before the job begins.

Just Outside the Map?

Maybe you live on the edge of one of these towns, or in a county pocket with a Round Rock mailing address. Send the request anyway, or call (512) 555-0163. If we can't place it with a roofer who serves your street, we'll tell you plainly instead of stretching the area.
